Having just finished a university Educational Leadership program in California, I kept thinking to myself, "This text should have been required reading!" I can't recommend Becoming a School Principal highly enough. The focus throughout is always on student learning and on the responsibility that educational leaders have to the school community to insist that student learning/growth be the top priority. I love that the author regularly shares real-life examples, both successes and failures, and that her mindset is one of continual growth, not of "waving a magic wand" or "finding that one key" to success. Too many educational texts are set up in a formulaic way that makes reading them dull, or are laden with the "ed jargon of the times." Sarah Fiarman's book is honest, motivating, and most importantly, hopeful. It shares the challenges of leading an elementary school while giving readers the confidence to say, "We can do this!"
